There will be a lane closure on the Palmer Road Bridge for more than a month in Yonkers as Westchester County performs work on the roadway.
Yonkers Councilman Mike Breen said that he was notified on Friday, April 5, that crews would be performing work on the westbound lanes on the bridge between Paxton Avenue and Parkview Avenue.
The section of Palmer Road is expected to be closed beginning on Wednesday, April 10, through Sunday, June 30, as they make repairs. City officials in Yonkers were notified of the closure by the Westchester County Department of Public Works and Transportation on Sunday, April 8.
During the scope of the project, the bridge will remain open in the eastbound direction for access to Lawrence Hospital. The repairs are expected to cost approximately 3.375 million, which will include the design, construction management and construction.
Motorists have been advised that there will be delays in the area while repairs are being made, and they have been advised to seek alternate routes.
“Please know that I am looking into why we are being notified at such a late date,” Breen said. “And I have made it clear to all involved that the residents of this area deserve much better communication.”
“As is customary for all road maintenance projects," a spokesperson for Westchester County said, "the plans regarding the closure of the westbound lane of Palmer Road between Paxton Avenue and Parkview Avenue were communicated directly with and reviewed by Yonkers Traffic, Yonkers Engineering, Bronxville DPW and the Bronxville Village Manager over the course of the past two years. A pre-construction meeting with the same group of officials was held last October where the plans for spring construction and the necessary detours were announced.
"As an additional reminder, the detour plan was sent over last Friday, prior to the start of construction. The detour is the same one used in the past for work on the portion of Palmer Road over the Bronx River Parkway and stretches from Palmer Road to Station Plaza, to Pondfield Road West, to Bronxville Road and then back to Palmer Road.”
